On the way out of Kyoto, we stopped in at a tea shop to learn the art of matcha-making. The kids got to grind the leaves to powder and then mix it with hot water to drink. We even learned some rules of the tea ceremony.

Then we went to Nara Park, which is known for its friendly and very polite deer. We didn’t have to wait our turn here to get close to the deer.

They. Are. Everywhere!

This was probably the kids’ favorite surprise in Japan. And they soon found out that they are called “polite” deer because they will bow to you to get some food.

I, personally, questioned their “polite-ness” when they kept biting my clothing if I was too slow to feed them.

Then we hiked the summit of Mount Wakakusa to get a view of Nara. The kids are getting tired of steep hikes at this point, but they persevered and were rewarded with more deer at the top.

On another day we went to the Osaka Castle Park, which dated back to 1583 and told the history of the shogun in that area. It was fascinating.

We spent some time walking around Dotonbori and other areas trying local favorite dishes.

The last thing we did in Osaka, and probably one of our favorite activities in all of Japan, was the Ninja Experience at Ninja Do.

We trained in stealth, the Katana, shuriken (throwing stars) and lastly, did a mock battle with our instructor. We laughed a lot and had a great time.

We enjoyed visiting the major cities, but next time we visit Japan I want to go north and have some quieter experiences. I’m open to suggestions!

Hey Alana! I'm curious- is it that busy year round? Or is it because it's summertime? Just wondering when would be the best time to visit some of these more popular cities/ areas.

Replying to

We were there in April, right near Easter. So I do think Spring Break and post Cherry Blossom season might have made it busier. A friend of mine from Japan says that it's been this bad since after Covid. I've heard that they may impose some restrictions in the future because it is getting. One of our tour guides suggest fall as a good time to visit. It's a smaller popular season because of fall tree colors, but no where near Cherry Blossom or summer travels.
